You’ve brushed off the snow and scraped off the frost. Now you’re ready to get on the road. But before you put your vehicle in drive, your windshield fogs up.

Windows can fog any time of the year, whether it’s summer or the middle of winter. But cold temperatures can create the ideal conditions for foggy windshields. You and your passengers warm up the cold air inside the vehicle. And when the warm moisture hits the cold glass, fog and condensation occurs.

While wiping the condensation off the window may seem like the best idea, there’s something else you can do to defog your windshield fast: Turn on your vehicle’s air conditioning!

How to Defog a Windshield With AC

Even if it’s freezing cold outside, turn on the AC and aim the vents up so the airflow hits the windshield. Your car’s air conditioning system also acts as a dehumidifier, so it will quickly remove the moisture inside the vehicle by circulating the air through the cold fins in the evaporator.

If your vehicle doesn’t have air conditioning, or it doesn’t work, turn the blower on high and open your windows a crack to allow moisture to escape.

Next time your windshield fogs up, crank up your car’s AC. Your windows will defog quickly and you’ll be on your way.
